SAIPAN – A peaceful protest rally against China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea was held Saturday, April 30 at the San Jose intersection in Saipan led by Dr. Celia Lamkin, chairwoman of U.S. Pinoys for Good Governance.

The protest rally was held in anticipation of the decision of the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration at Hague, Netherlands, with regard to the case filed by the Philippines against China with regard to West Philippine Sea issues. The arbitration tribunal is expected to release the decision by June.

A simultaneous coordinated protest rally was also held in Guam, by the USPGG Guam chapter, at the same time as the Saipan protest.

According to Lamkin, as soon as a favorable decision has come out of Hague, the Philippine government should immediately implement a development plan for the islands in the West Philippine Sea.

“National Youth Movement proposes eco-tourism, ocean farming, or marine bio study camps as alternatives for the islands at West Philippine Sea,” Lamkin said.

President for the National Youth Movement Marianas chapter Reynafe Aniga said, “Because it is my first time to join a protest, I’m not too sure how I feel. I see the adults and I think they’re very brave for doing this protest rally. But I know these types of issue are bigger outside of Saipan. I’m imagining how it is like for bigger protest rally in other countries.”

“And we are standing up for something that is right, and not for something that we’re wasting our time on,” Aniga said.

The group also rallied in support of Philippine presidential candidate Mar Roxas, and vice president candidate Leni Robredo.
